1. What is SSI?

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is a federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). It helps aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income by providing cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

2. How Does the Calculator Work?

The calculator uses the basic SSI formula:

\[ SSI = Federal\ Rate - Countable\ Income \]

Where:

Explanation: Your SSI payment equals the federal benefit rate minus your countable income. If your countable income exceeds the federal rate, you won't qualify for SSI.

3. Understanding the Components

Federal Rate: This is the maximum monthly SSI payment. In 2023, the federal benefit rate is $914 for an individual and $1,371 for a couple.

Countable Income: Not all income counts for SSI. The SSA excludes the first $20 of most income received in a month and the first $65 of earnings plus half of earnings over $65.

4. Using the Calculator

Tips: Enter the current federal SSI rate and your countable monthly income. The calculator will determine your estimated SSI payment amount.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What counts as income for SSI?
A: SSI counts earned income (wages, self-employment), unearned income (Social Security benefits, pensions, gifts), and in-kind support (food or shelter you get for free or less than fair market value).

Q2: Can I get SSI if I have other income?
A: Yes, but your SSI payment will be reduced dollar for dollar by your countable income after applicable exclusions.

Q3: How often is the federal rate updated?
A: The federal benefit rate is adjusted annually based on cost-of-living increases.

Q4: Are there state supplements to SSI?
A: Many states add money to the federal SSI payment. These state supplements aren't included in the federal rate.

Q5: What if my SSI calculation is zero?
A: If your countable income equals or exceeds the federal rate, you won't qualify for SSI benefits.
