Fraction Representation:

A fraction represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts. It consists of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number) separated by a fraction bar.
Basic Calculators: Most basic calculators don't support direct fraction input. You'll need to divide numerator by denominator (a ÷ b =).
Scientific Calculators: Many have a dedicated fraction button (often labeled a b/c). Press this button between numerator and denominator entries.
Graphing Calculators: Typically have a fraction template in the math menu. On TI calculators, press ALPHA then Y= to access the fraction template.
To convert a fraction to decimal: divide numerator by denominator.
Example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
To convert decimal to fraction: use the calculator's conversion function or multiply decimal by denominators until you get an integer numerator.
A fraction is simplified when numerator and denominator have no common divisors other than 1. Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of both numbers and divide both by it.
Q1: Why can't I enter fractions directly on my calculator?
A: Basic calculators typically don't support fraction display. You'll need to perform division or upgrade to a scientific calculator.
Q2: How do I enter mixed numbers?
A: On scientific calculators, use the a b/c button. Enter whole number first, then fraction parts.
Q3: My calculator shows decimals instead of fractions - how to change?
A: Look for a button labeled F↔D (fraction/decimal) or check mode settings to change display format.
Q4: Can I perform calculations with fractions?
A: Yes, on scientific calculators you can add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions directly.
Q5: What if my denominator is zero?
A: Division by zero is undefined. The calculator will display an error.
